Her suicide attempts thwarted, her life restored by hope and love

A middle aged woman was on her way to commit suicide until she saw a message of hope and love on New Life Fellowship's  Facebook page. Instead she embraced the hope offered and decided to continue to live for her ten year old son.

She had a big business and used to make lots of money. However, her personal life was not stable. She was unhappy.  She was cheated by her business partners. She started to lose more money. And finally, her business went belly-up. She was in debt.

Night after night she felt depressed. Her hatred of her business partners, the anxiety about her family’s finances, and the fear of not being able to support her son were holding her back from sleeping peacefully. She decided to hurt herself even more. She started to spend time with her friends drinking and gambling which put her into more debt!

The burden of her debts was getting so heavy that she decided to sell off everything that she possessed in order to pay off what she owed. After resolving her debt, she planned to end her life.

We were informed that she was on her way to act out her plan when she read her Facebook , probably her last time to see what her friends’ latest posts were before she left this world. She then saw a live video shared by one of her contacts, the live video of New Life Fellowship's Facebook Page and it was a church sermon about a message of hope and the love of the Lord Jesus Christ. Miraculously, something touched her, and she decided not to kill herself.  She managed to meet the person who shared the live video, and she was introduced to the services at New Life Fellowship.

Here, her hope started to be restored. She said that she had never had people accept her unconditionally before and whom genuinely liked her!  It was a big internal transformation. She now regularly comes to our church service with regular follow-ups with some of our great pastors.

Recently, she found a new job. She has become a new person.

Jeremiah 29: 11-13"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

From a junk scavenger to an influential English teacher

Siev Khea, 27, is a great English teacher at New Life Foundation. He is now a graduate with an English literature degree.  For over years, he striggle to survive in the unknown before he is who he is right now. Siev Khea has a story to hare with us.

Ended up in the unknown

At the age of 13, Khea decided to leave his dull, and lifeless village , and migrated to the capital city, an known place where he knew nobody. The first job he ever found with his young age skill was to scavenge for used items inside trash bins along streets in town. Each day of his whole day of sweat, he could make 2000 riel ( 0.50 cent) which was enough back then to make ends meet.

Life was so difficult to imagine. He had no friends, not enough food to eat, no place to sleep at night, and no place to shower. He told us that every time he showered, he had to risk swimming in the Mekong river where drowning-cases were so common. It was free of charge, but the level of danger was so high for him, let alone the safety and the quality of the water he drank. Sometimes he had to live with an hungry stomach , and went to bed with the dream of getting decent food to satisfy. One day, he recalled, a group of fellows came and forced him to take glue-sniffing ( drug-addiction). Fortunately, he learned enough about the danger of the drug , and the glue, and he was able to say "No" to them.

As life became more difficult to live and hard to move forward, Khea started to find a different path to walk. One day, when he was scavenging for things to take around Wat Phnom , a landmark of the city, he saw a group of construction guys moving their materials including bricks, and cement. Khea approached them with his humble heart, and asked if they could offer anything he could do in exchange for food to eat. Kindly , the men accepted his begging, and offered a job for him. It was a sweat job inside an old facility located about 20 minutes east of the city. Though the job was different with better benefits for life, Khea still described the works and the conditions as still nightmare for him. He earned about 50000 riel ( 10 USD) per month but the work conditions were almost a torturing facility.

He had to bear living there , but his patience was over when something terrible happened. When one of the workers accidentally caught one of his arms into a machine. Half of his arm had to be cut off. Since then, Khea decided to leave the brick facility after almost working there for 8 months.

Bell-Boy at a bus-station

Khea was referred to another job as a bell-boy. This job was not at a hotel, but at a bus station; carry bags for tourists at the bus station. He offered great services to many. The workplace allowed him and other young men to stay there together with the provision of meals. Khea earned about 90000 riels ( 20 USD) per month. He enjoyed the job until one day, he faced something unexpected. While working at the bus station , he saw a small note book. He did not know what a notebook was. With the desire of learning how to read , write and draw, Khea started to pull out a pen and sketched some interesting pictures with some lines crossing all over like a kindergarten child. Later there was an announcement looking for something missing. Khea was an honest boy, at least he tried to be honest because he found the notebook, and he was happily willing to return the book. As soon as they saw what on the notebook, Khea was immediately fired. It was not a normal notebook, but a tourist's passport and Khea did not know that the purpose of a passport was to allow someone to cross a country , and once you lose it you can get in big trouble. With no grace, poor Khea had to go find a different job to survive.

Right thought lead to right course

Khea later found other jobs at night in a restaurant , and beer-gardens, and a construction working site which was another sweat job for him. Day by day, Khea looked at people with motors, and cars, and happy smiles. Most of what he earned, he saved, and he saved. His savings grew enough that he could afford to buy a motorbike to give a riding service like a motorbike taxi which in Khmer is called "Moto Dub". You can waive while standing on a corner and a moto dub driver will come and ask where your destination is. Khea used his motorbike to learn some income to live. What changed everything was when he thought about developing his life with investment in education.

He believed that education can lead to a bright future. He decided to attend school. His commitment and hard work in study allowed him to finish his high school successfully.

New Life at New Life Foundation

Khea came to New Life Foundation and met some great friends who shared the love of God with him. He decided to accept Jesus as his Lord, and Savior. His life started to be filled with joy, and he met other great Christians who love , supported , and mentored him to move on in life until he graduated from his university in English literature. Right now Khea is an influential English teacher. He teaches a few classes at New Life Foundation. One of his classes, he has almost 80 students. They love to learn English with Siev Khea.

Testimony: friends, you have asked me, and some of you might still wonder how my husband and I ended up becoming Christ followers. Now, I feel like I have a privilege to share with you some good news because I used to have the same questions, and I was like you, I did not know who Jesus was .  After 6 years of learning about one another, we both decided to get married at the end of 2012. We were in the same university. After 2 years of our married life, my husband was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome , and high blood pressure. My husband's health deteriorated so serious that he became a dialysis patient.  This was a heart-broken news and it was horrific for me and the whole family. Questions with no-answers kept asking me , in my life , I had never done any evil things, why such bad things happened to my couple life, and why my husband and I had to bear this heavy burden? Why fear, and why having to spend so much money on something that we had not expected at all.  His condition tormented off and on, and he had to be visit a hospital so often that he did not have time to be home. Sometimes, his blood pressure's level rose up so high that none of the pills prescribed worked, and it went on over a month or something. I never forget one night on December 28th 2014,  I was talking to one my close friends about my husband's syndromes when he became very sick, and he almost passed away, the oxygen’s level dropped from 100 to 40, and his blood pressure went very high, leading to coughing with blood. Immediately, he was sent to an emergency room for several hours.  Standing outside of the room in panic, I felt spiritless, no soul because I had cried, running out of my tear drops, and I had no more drops to shed. My heart almost stopped working when seeing doctors coming out with their head down, making me feel that something hopeless, something sad about to take place, their head signaled to everyone that nothing they could do, and they left us with no words. I had no more tear drops, and my heart broke as I saw my relatives, my in laws started to feel disappointed and hopeless. Seeing this, I tried to hide my feeling because I did not want them to be more depressed.  I found a silent moment pondering myself over some good news I had heard about Jesus whom my own sister had shared to me when my husband first got sick. At that time, I did not pay attention, I closed my ears, and ignored. I just believed that when someone is sick, it is common sense that he or she only needs a doctor, and one they are treated by a doctor, they need a lot of money to cover the cost and that is the only solution.  Though I was seeking helps from my sister, I did not want to trade my religious mindset to her assistance. In other words, I did not feel comfortable to switch my old religion which I had upheld since birth. Kindly , my sister did not give any pressure, or asked me to give back back in return.  I remember what she said to me "Only Him, Jesus could my chain tormenting my life be removed , and that "I need to search for Jesus ". She reassured me that it was easy to , she said all I needed to do is to believe, and believe with all my heart. As soon as I thought about it, I heard a voice saying "daughter, I love you, your abandoned will be healed, and your fear will be gone", as I was paying attention to the voice, my sister made a visit call from miles and miles away on the other side of the earth, her voice was so soft with some sobering sound, yet, she brought encouragement. She asked me to pray with her, and asked that I prayed to give my husband's condition to Jesus's hands. I listened to her prayers while dropping tear a lot. Back then, I did not know what prayers were. I was feeling that I no longer could see my husband, and even heard his goodbye words.  At first the doctors informed my family and all the relatives to be prepared to accept something heart-broken. A religious tape was given to play to comfort him , and we all were advised to remove the oxygen tube , and we were aware that once the tube was removed , his breath longer exist. We were told that it would be better to let him go because there is no hope, and more money would be spent in vain.  At the end of my prayers, I closed my eyes, and started to search for the name of Jesus even though I did not know who Jesus was, where He came from? How he looked like? All I did was to put my whole trust in Him, my faith in Him. Surely enough, only about two nights, He did answered my prayers. He restored my husband's health, my husband was awake with progress miraculously.  We both accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior at the end of  2014. We believe that He paid for everyone's sin. He took all our pain, all our disease, He took it all. I won't turn back to my old faith of uncertainty, faith with fear, faith of unknown, and no-clarity. Therefore, we committed to follow Jesus, and we don't regret. We have no shame to declare this good news to others. We really thanks God that allows me and my husband to be a living witness to others. I remember a song we always listened to and we both sill listen to it. It is called "In Christ alone" , which  encourages me and my husband to continue to trust God in every circumstances.  Even though, my husband still has to go through dialysis three times per week, he still works as normal, and we still live our lives in peace, and joy because we put our whole trust in God. We trust in His provision even though our expense goes up in some months.  In Mathew 6:25-28 " 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin." I am not ashamed to share the good news with everyone I know. Brothers and sister, seek God, especially those with no hope, no more chances in life, be humble, and search Him, you will find him. You will receive your salvation, and you will be forgiven from your sin because God love everybody, you only need to give your heart to Jesus.  In John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Thank You, Lord for letting us have this opportunity to witness , and be the blessing to others.  God bless you all.

She decided to carry the cross of Jesus in her family

She committed to carrying the cross of Jesus.

TESTIMONY: she decided to confront her father during the ancestor holiday.  Theary , one of our intern volunteers, shared her confrontation with her father during the recent ancestor holidays, Pchum Ben.  Some of you might know and some of you might not know much about the holidays that were held last week. It is called Pchum Ben Days, the time when Khmer people follow their rituals at Buddhist temples. They bring over food, and gifts to the temple believing that those things will be transferred to the in spiritual world to their ancestors. It is also believed that their deceased parents or relatives's spirits locked up in hell are released for the first 15 days of the dark moon in order for them to come to get food because they are hungry. At 4 AM in the morning during these days, they prepare balls of sticky rice on trays for their nearby temples. People gather there to listen to monks chanting and invite the spirit to come, then they start to scatter the food around the temple building.  During this time, children are supposed to help their parents carry food to the temple to offer to Buddhist monks. Out in a community village, there is social pressure if you don't do it. Theary who chose Jesus a few years ago, had faced this sort of pressure when she did not want to comply with doing the ritual. Every year, her father kept talking negatively about Christianity, he disliked the fact that his daughter chose to follow Jesus.  Theary felt emotionally disturbed and rejected because she loves her parents, and her family but she doesn't want to come against her conviction either.  She told us that she had been praying about her visit to her parents during this holiday, and hoped that her parents would not force her to practice any rituals. Unlike a few years before, this year her father seemed to be different. He did not pressure her to do anything, but accepted her presence when she paid the visit. Theary really thanked God for allowing her to be able to spend time with her family, and set aside those rituals.  In Khmer society, religious discrimination can still be seen. To be a Christian means a big sacrifice in life. one has to be ready to accept rejection not only among their peers, but also among their family members. It is just like what the Bible talks about carrying the cross. You have to be ready to be denied by people you love. Yet, when we obey, and embrace His Love, we will gain more. In Theary’s story , we saw that her prayers really softened her father's heart. She believes that sooner or later, her father and other members in the family will come and be saved like her.
